If you’ve been to any game store in the past 20 years, you’ve no doubt seen Sega titles like Sonic the Hedgehog and Bayonetta lining the shelves. However, Sega’s studios have also been pumping out unique products, gadgets and accessories alongside their games.  From wacky peripherals to tasty treats, Sega’s innovation stretches above and beyond the gaming field.[nextpage]

1. To coincide with the 90s hit show “Baywatch,” Sega made a number of T-shirts for the show, complete with the slogan “Never played a better game!”

2. Banpresto created Zippos shaped like the Mega Drive and Saturn for a two week period last year. The detailed lighters are now extremely rare, fetching over $150 on import sites.

3. The Menancer was created

I think it’s fair to say that Bayonetta is by far the hottest witch to ever appear in any videogame, and has really turned into one of Sega’s best new IPs in years. With that said, it’s really no surprise that talented gamers show their love for her in many ways, from art to well done cosplay outfits, and now a Bayonetta chibi plush doll. The circle is complete.[nextpage]

If you don’t know what chibi is, let me explain.  It’s the Japanese word meaning short person or child. The word has been adopted by many anime fans to mean something along the lines of a child version of a character. Deviant artist, Usako-Chan, has created a truly unique and cute chibi Bayonetta. According to Usako-Chan, the doll took four full days to finish, and the guns are magnetic

It really wasn’t too long ago, when Sega’s made-in-Japan titles that were never imported to the US required a translation book in one hand and a controller in the other if you wanted to play them. Those dark ages are over, largely in part to Sega’s localization team (thanks for Seaman by the way.) Still, some of their best games still remain across the pond. A dating sim with robots?  A free-roaming samurai title?  Yes please!  Here are some of the titles we want on our shores.[nextpage]

Initial D Extreme Stage (PS3)

Making an appearance in arcades worldwide, this latest iteration of racing game Initial D has made its way to Japanese PlayStation 3’s.  Bringing drifting to the masses long before “The Fast and the Furious:

Just so happens we are giving away a copy of Bayonetta, and this new figure pops up. I'd say something snappy about how ridiculously sexy the pose is, but I'm drooling too much to be able to conjure anything up. Just sit back and bask in the design for a bit, while I sop up this dribble on my desk.[nextpage]

So this new figure is supposedly making its debut at the Wonder Festival in Japan next week. Will we get this figure in the US? Don't know yet. We'll have to wait and see. Note that this is a garage kit, so that means you can have the pleasure of painting and detailing it on your own. Which only means my 3rd grade level of coloring is only going to ruin it...

We’re at the stage in the console lifecycle where console makers are trying their darnest to get gamers to buy all sorts of crazy add-ons.  If you think that the gaming peripherals madness is bad now, then you surely must have forgotten about Sega during their console days.[nextpage]

Back when Sega was on top of the world, one aspect of their downfall was flooding the market with way too much... junk. All these different add-ons only segmented the market, ensuring that no peripheral ever took off.

Granted, not all the products shown are from Sega, but they were meant for the console. And yes, you can actually set it up that way. Obviously something is needed to hold the mass of gaming nonsense up, that’s why the products are leaning on the dude’s leg.

Over the last 60 years, Sega has become one of the most impressive gaming publishers to entertain gamers around the world. When a company has a speedy bluehedgehog as its mascot, experience in both the software and hardware industry, and hundreds of games under its belt, you’re bound to find a fan somewhere of their work.  Now it’s time to truly test how blue your blood is! Of these following facts, how many do you know? [nextpage]

  1. Licensed Dreamcast games were still being made in Japan until 2007. The last one was a shoot-’em-up titled Trigger Heart Exelica.  Amazingly, unlicensed games for the Dreamcast are still being made worldwide, with the last one being 2009’s Rush Rush Rally Racing.

  1. Sega’s 32-bit console,

It’s no surprise that we love Sega, even their naughty bits.  Back when gaming was a little less mainstream, many gaming companies would push their ad campaigns to the brink of edgy. Sega was no exception. Sega released some very naughty and suggestive ads in the United Kingdom during their reign at the top.  But you weren’t likely to run into some of these ads in the subway on your way to work.  [nextpage]

Surprisingly, for the time, these print ads were featured in a British adult comic Viz.  Readers of the comic who stopped to read these Sega ads were treated to some very funny text, some reading, “You sit there, eyes glued to the writhing, arcade-quality graphics, pulling and squeezing your knob.  Now you’re breathing heavily

In 1993, most gamers were busy making sweet love to their Super Nintendos and Sega Genesises. The two systems dominated the 1990s. Many companies attempted to challenge the two juggernauts with their own consoles.  None, however, were as gungho as Pioneer’s LaserActive. [nextpage]

The LaserActive was released in 1993 with hopes of penetrating the videogame market with cutting edge Laserdisc technology, a dead format that had never really lived to begin with.  Though some had hope for the new system, the mass market rejected it like many other consoles attempting to enter the market.

The LaserActive actually sounded amazing on paper, with the ability to expand the hardware to include the Sega Genesis, PC, and TurdoGrafx 16 games, hardware to make these features actually
