With some of the upcoming holiday season's best games around the corner, I would expect to see several high-profile videogame TV commercials. For the casual gamer, sometimes these commercials are enough to sway the opinion of someone on the ropes of buying a game with a new intellectual property or character brand. Over the last several days, I've combined a list of my favorite gaming commercials, measured not just by humor or artistic design, but also their impact on us as gamers as we look at them today. Most of these commercials should give you goosebumps because of their overall nostalgic flavor, but let's not forget about the emotions that were brought out by these as well.
I bring you... The Top 10 Game Commercials Worth Reliving:
10.) Game Genie (NES)
Why it's on the list: How could anyone be NOT blown away by this commercial, where the product was so revolutionary for its time? Let's not forget about the Bill & Ted theme of the commercial, which made the features of "infinite health" and "jump higher" as amazingly radical as they really were at the time. There weren't any GameFAQS.com, GameCheats.com, or anything like that for people to get ahead in video-games. Passwords were sometimes hard to come by and some people could argue that the Game Genie accessory made video-games fun for those without key game-playing skills like problem-solving and quick reaction times. For many years, the Game Genie would get rid of the biggest problem in most video-games with the work-around to never die. For some people addicted to beating games (not achievements!) during the time, that workaround was huge. Thanks Galoob.
9.) Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis)
Why it's on the list: It's Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, in a video-game. The commercials also reveal how faithful the game is to portions of the Smooth Criminal music video, highly regarded as one of the best music videos of all time. The fact that the game was only available at home for the SEGA Genesis and not the Super Nintendo gave it even that more of an eye-opening experience when watching the commercial.
8.) Super Smash Bros. - Happy Together - (N64)
Why it's on the list: If you didn't know about this game before it came out on the Nintendo 64, then the commercial should've been convincing enough to buy the game. The commercial starts off with Pikachu, Yoshi, Mario and Donkey Kong walking through a flower field, only to end with all of them bum-rushing the hell outta' each other. For a company like Nintendo - known to please its usually younger-demographic - this was a fresh sight to experience.
7.) Microsoft: Waterballoons (Xbox 360)
Why it's on the list: This commercial released around the time when the Xbox 360 was starting to pick up some steam in 2006. What makes this one so special is the sheer scope of everything in this one giant city, with everyone having fun despite what's going on. A great marketed commercial done by an award-winning director, this 90-second spot also inspired Microsoft to make the commercial even more real with a World Record breaking waterballoon fight. With 20 million Xbox Live users, it seems now that everyone has really "jumped in".
6.) Halo 3 - Believe (Xbox 360)
Why it's on the list: It's solemn and different -- definitely not what you'd expect from a videogame commercial of what was then the most anticipated videogame launch of all-time. We get images of soldiers dying, both human and Covenant of the Halo world, but see a striking image of Master Chief at the very end, humanity's last hope. It's also a culmination of every gamer's last dive into Master Chief's story. The emotional impact of this commercial was enough to add it to the list.
5.) Nintendo: Wii Would Like To Play (Series) - (Wii)
Why it's on the list: People surely wanted to play. With over 50 million Wii owners around the world, there's a lot of gamers out there that probably weren't as active in the industry before the Wii came out. This commercial, combined with the numerous viral videos and word of mouth reviews around the world summed up the Wii's global reach toward non-gamers. It helps that some of the initial gameplay were fun to watch for the first time as well, and who can forget the SMART car?
4.) Sega: Genesis Does What NINTENDON'T (Genesis)
Why it's on the list: A catchy theme and a slogan that's never going to be forgotten for the ultimate battle of the 16-bit period of time in the videogame industry. A direct shot at Nintendo, Sega's quirkiness and confidence on their rising stake during the battling days of the Genesis and the Super Nintendo was interesting to say the least. But this commercial, with Michael Jackson, Joe Montana and Buster Douglas headlined the way for an all-star studded commercial that made Genesis owners cheer with glee.
3.) Gears of War - Mad World (Xbox 360)
Why it's on the list: This commercial was done for an original IP that was heavily backed by gamers anticipating the arrival of Marcus Fenix. But what if you weren't a gamer and saw this commercial for the first time? Would you have thought that it was a videogame, or a full-length motion picture? The emotionally driven scenes with Tears for Fears' Mad World playing in the background and the end-of-world atmospheres showcased the irony of the game's content. With an epic battle at the very end, where survival was the only option, the commercial would become a statement of Epic Games' true arrival in the videogame industry and the creation of a truly remarkable videogame series (that still hasn't ended).
2.) Nintendo: Super Mario Bros. 3 - MARIO! (NES)
Why it's on the list: There's several ways that you can sum up why Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. 3 was one of the best selling games in videogame history. Of course, everyone knows that movie, The Wizard, as being the first time U.S. audiences saw the game in its initial-form. But let's not forget about this commercial, which showcases the nation's love for Nintendo's mascot plumber. It was a follow-up to the movie's final message (Hint: BUY Super Mario Bros. 3 when it comes out!) and also reiterated the amazing popularity of the videogame series as a whole. People demanded more Mario, and with more than 18 million copies sold worldwide for this game alone, a World Record, everyone - including Nintendo - reaped the benefits.
1.) Nintendo: Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time - Have Ye What It Takes? (N64)
Why it's on the list: There's hordes of Zelda fans. I may be in the minority here because there's so many great games these days, but Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still my favorite game of all-time. There just hasn't been anything that has replicated my love for how well the game was crafted. From its build-up, announcement and this glorifying commercial, Zelda 64 is still the pinnacle moment of my love for video-games. The graphics and control scheme (lock-on targeting) were revolutionary for its time. The commercial, amazingly artistic for a video-game commercial during its time, was just a hint of the high-level of storytelling the game had to offer. Critically loved, the commercial's entrance theme (from Conan the Barbarian) can be heard in combination with the fanboy-ish yells of happiness. That... my friends is anticipation, and Nintendo couldn't have done it any better way.
The HD version (minus "Have Ye What It Takes" at the end):
Honorable Mentions: Ratchet and Clank (weapons), Legend of Zelda rap (NES) and Final Fantasy 7 (PSX).
Millions of dollars are being spent on video-game commercials every single month. Sometimes, some games just need to be positioned for both the hardcore and casual gaming public and commercials can sometimes express that pretty clearly. With the holiday season just around the corner, it'll be interesting to see what kind of TV ads we get. Let's not forget about international commercials either, which is in a class all by itself. These commercial ads are fun and represent just a small piece of how careful marketing can do wonders for videogames.
